Dear Representative,

Bush has made me a radical.

I have never marched in a political rally, seldom given money to political candidates, rarely written to my representatives. But his obsession with Iraq has gone too far. I pledge you my word, if he invades Iraq I will be in the streets with thousands of others, calling for his head on stick. This is an administration that knows nothing, absolutely nothing, of diplomacy. Having realized that the United States is arguably the only superpower militarily left standing, they figure the only approach they need to deal with any problem is The Big Stick. No matter that none of our allies believe that war with Iraq is necessary, or prudent. No matter that the Arab world will be enraged by our assault on a sovereign nation, spawning more hatred and terrorism. No matter that diplomacy and negotiation have been spurned at every opportunity.

No, all that seems to matter to Bush is that Saddam has to go. And why? I’m convinced that the reason is in our nation’s voracious appetite for oil. And Bush’s political connections are all about oil... Bush’s political backers, family, and administration are knee-deep in oil company executives who would love nothing more than to rebuild Iraq and make it safe for Halliburton or Schlumberger or Shell. I recognize that they have our nation’s interest in continuing the flow of oil, but that’s just a fortunate coincidence behind the cover story of making Iraq safe for democracy, or looking for weapons of mass destruction, or whatever this week’s excuse for invading Iraq happens to be. The real story is that whoever controls the oil, controls the world, and putting a puppet head of state in Iraq makes Bush and his cronies rich and powerful.

I urge you, in the strongest possible way, to deny George W. Bush any political support for an invasion of Iraq.

Sincerely,

Kurt

[Comment: I have since taken part in marches and protests here in Portland.
Here are some photos from those events.]
